Emergency Housing Service

The La Trobe University Student Union (LTSU) and the La Trobe University aim to provide an all-inclusive assistance package for students in need. You can be provided with emergency housing, referral services, clothing and food.


To be eligible to apply for Emergency Accommodation, you must be:

  • A currently enrolled La Trobe University student, and
  • Referred to Accommodation Services by the Student Union or other relevant University department (for example, Equality and Diversity, Counselling etc.), and
  • In need of emergency accommodation.
  • Financial hardship will also be taken into account.

If you feel that you may not meet the above criteria but require housing support, we still encourage you to contact our advocacy service below to discuss your specific circumstances.

Emergency Housing Guidelines

Students wishing to apply for Emergency Accommodation must be referred by a staff member of the Student Union or other relevant University department. The staff member will contact Accommodation Services (c/Manager, Accommodation Services) and assist the student in completing an Emergency Accommodation Application Form. This form will be submitted to the Accommodation Services Office in person or via email.

Applications will be considered as soon as possible after they have been received, and the student and staff member responsible will be contacted as soon as a decision is reached.

Services provided by Accommodation Services:

  • Accommodation for the agreed duration of the Emergency Accommodation application , usually ­5 days (additional accommodation by negotiation)
  • Provision of information regarding accommodation options on campus and offsite, including potential for conversion to casual or permanent resident in on-campus accommodation and associated costs;
  • Assistance and advice in securing permanent accommodation;
  • Informing relevant staff and student leaders as required (limiting notification of personal information or circumstances, rather check in and check out dates as required).

Other forms of accommodation options or referral options are available and can be accessed through approaching the Student Union or Accommodation Services external database. The Food Bank and Clothes Bank are always available to students in need and are run by the Student Union.
